The discharge splint has two functions:
- Prevent teeth from contacting each other
- Allow chewing muscles to relax
It is usually done in the upper arch, it is made of resin and transparent in color.
The patient should use it at night, since it is when they grind their teeth the most when they have no consciousness.
At first it may be difficult for the patient to adjust to sleeping with the discharge plate, but after a few days they hardly notice it. It is therefore easy to carry and does not cause discomfort.
Performing it is very simple, in a first visit a mold of the patient’s mouth is made and in a second visit it is placed and delivered.

The discharge splint is made when the patient is a squeezer or bruxist.
In most cases, these types of patients have one or two common characteristics:
- They report that they wake up in the morning with pain in the muscles of the mouth or with the sensation of having been squeezing all night.
- They show great wear on the teeth as they are barely shaped or wear is beginning to be seen on the crushing surface.
